What Is Detox?

Learn why detox is an important step for individuals struggling with substance abuse

When a person has been abusing a drug for an extended length of time, his or her body changes its internal chemistry in order to accommodate the presence of that drug. As a result, when a person then attempts to abstain from abusing this drug, his or her body must readjust to functioning without the drug present. This readjustment process is known as withdrawal, and it often involves several uncomfortable symptoms.
